The Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC) is an executive agency of the Florida government charged with the marketing, research and regulation of the Florida citrus industry. It’s governed by the Florida Citrus Commission, an eleven-member board appointed by the Governor of Florida to represent citrus growers, processors and packers.

Responsibilities and Activities

The FDOC has extensive regulatory responsibilities, covering every aspect of the industry, including research, production, maturity standards, licensing, transportation, labeling, packing and processing.

As a health professional, you may be particularly interested in research that relates to the health and nutrition of 100% orange juice.

Research Approach

The FDOC Scientific Research Department monitors and sponsors nutrition and health and wellness research on behalf of citrus, offering support for communication of nutrition and health benefits of Florida citrus fruit and juice to health professionals and consumers. The department also keeps close tabs on issues that may relate to the citrus industry and actively collaborates with researchers and other organizations to enhance citrus research programs around the globe.

Funding and Economic Impact

The FDOC’s activities are funded by an assessment paid by growers on each box of citrus that moves through commercial channels. In recent years, the FDOC has also been provided with funding from the State of Florida to support research initiatives on the production side of the industry, including increasing the production of trees and advancing technologies used to combat citrus greening. These funds have also been provided to support the overall marketing of Florida citrus products.

The industry employs over 32,500 people, provides an annual economic impact of $6.9 billion to the state, and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenues that help support Florida’s schools, roads and health care services.
